Bio

Rory was born in Africa and registered as a Canadian born abroad. He has been married for 33 years with 3 children and 4 grand-daughters.

Rory is an attempt survivor. If it were not for his wife intervening he would not be here today. He is living proof that intervention works. Rory comments “the contemplation of suicide is always an emotional health matter but this does not mean that suicide is always the result of mental illness. I was not mentally ill. Simply, in response to considerable grief, loss and trauma I felt my family at that time would be better off without me and I reached that decision through a rational, deductive process in response to my situation at the time – which was overwhelming.”

Four key factors influenced Rory to establish YLC: surviving his own suicide attempt; working to help youth overcome struggles with addiction and self destructive behaviors that sometimes lead to suicide; the loss of Rory’s children’s friends in a school shooting; and Viktor Frankl’s book, Man’s Search for Meaning.

Rory is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, a trained educator and a professional member of the American Counseling Association and the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association and is a noted speaker on youth and family issues and suicidology.
As founder of Your Life Counts Rory has been pioneering online and community initiatives to help people hold on to life in the toughest times.

Your Life Counts is dedicated to the memory of all victims and families of the Dunblane school massacre and to being a proactive resource to prevent such tragedies happening again – link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_massacre

It is not the critic who counts; 不是指出强者如何跌倒的人, 或者行动者本可以做得更好的地方. 功劳属于真正在舞台上的人, 他的脸被灰尘、汗水和鲜血弄脏了; 奋勇拼搏的人; 谁犯了错误, 谁一次又一次地做空, 因为没有错误和缺点就没有努力; 但谁真正努力去做这些事; 谁知道伟大的热情, 伟大的奉献; 谁把自己花在一个有价值的事业上; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, 谁在最坏的情况下, 如果他失败了, 至少失败而大胆, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. – 26th President of the USA, Theodore Roosevelt.

Rory was honored to have the encouragement and wise counsel of George IV. A great friend and

mentor to Rory. Known as the International Ambassador of Country Music, George IV recorded such

hits as “阿比林” ‘Canadian Pacific’. George IV challenged Rory to ‘swim against the tide’ in

developing YLC and expressed his deep concern about the focus on suicide and not life in our

culture. George IV’s encouraged Rory to focus on restoring hope and reconnecting people with their

reasons to live. We are grateful to George IV and look forward to working with George’s son, George

家庭 & Friends Council

The YLC Family & Friends Council was established in January 2007 to grow as a supportive resource for Parents, Siblings, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents and anyone else who has lost a precious youth or young family member or friend to suicide. Our understanding of ‘family’ is wide and extends across our community without prejudice. The most important thing of all is for help and support to be available when needed – and that is why the Family & Friends Council has been developed – to help YLC build its Programs and Services with help from the people who have the deepest heart for this life affirming, life saving work. We have over 25 families who constitute the developing Family & Friends Council, 包含:

“To be in the middle of a life darkened by the loss of a child who took their life is to live in a world that few can enter. But our tragedy can happen to anyone, even to the closest of families. Daniel, our 23-year-old son ended his life on Tuesday April 28, 2009”.

Lynn Keane was born and raised in Toronto, 安大略. Lynn is a former broadcast journalist, long time marathon runner and triathlete. She began her writing career publishing short essays in local and national newspapers, eventually developing an audience of family, friends and strangers who were interested in hearing her story. Keane has also recorded a documentary for CBC Radio.

Lynn has made herself an activist in her community, supporting grass-roots initiatives to inspire the local youth. Chronically, affected by ankylosing spondolitis, Keane is also a community ambassador for people living with autoimmune diseases. Lynn has written about her physical and mental pain in several national publications, both in print and online.

Lynn lives in Oakville with her husband and two daughters and her dog. She is writing her memoir to share her families story and to tell anyone what they need to know to recognize the symptoms and subtleties of depression so they can help their family member avoid self-destructive behaviours and suicide.“

Our children, our partners and our friends are not going to ask for help because mental illness is generally stigmatized in our communities”.

YLC is honoured to have Lynn Keane as an Ambassador as she helps us build our organization and save precious young lives in memory of her beloved son, Daniel.
